This is all very true and yes, I believe that conflict can help us grow. However, this only works when we are surrounded by healthy people, and under such circumstances, we might understand this naturally.
However, if most or all of the conflict we are experiencing is with severely disordered and abusive people, alcoholics or the like (my parents were both), this is doomed to fail. These people won’t grow through conflict, and we won’t either, if we keep interacting with them.
I used to believe that I was lacking emotional intelligence, self-awareness and open-mindedness, because getting along with my parents (or people similar to them) was impossible for me. However, it appears that I am capable of these things – if the people around me are, too.
Possibly something got lost in translation, but this episode isn’t about trying to grow toxic relationships. That would totally go against anything else I’ve ever said. That, and a toxic relationship can’t go past stage 2. Also, learning how to respond to conflict isn’t something that comes “naturally” to anyone. It’s something that we learn as we go, and some things we have to unlearn (if we are open to doing that).
Very valuable podcast.
Wish I would have heard this a little bit earlier, but it’s not too late. Many of the things you have addressed reflect my thoughts, perceptions, questions and experiences with my current relationship,
concerning conflict, compatibility, fear of conflict as a means of avoiding intimacy, demonizing or idealizing partner…this episode was entirely validating.
I feel we’re entering Stage 3. There has been growth and progress around the same old fights. I feel like we are finally accepting how eachother is, rather than projecting ourselves into eachother.
Amazing work, Nat! Thanks a bunch.
How lovely, EMC! And likewise, it’s validating to hear your experience reflected in what I’ve shared. Thank you so much!
